Google Eye Tracking Survey Focuses on Top Results

google-heat-mapThe official Google Blog has a story about using eye tracking tools to create heat maps of 34 usability study participants. The results are astounding and the heat map shows most of the users focused mostly on the top two results on the search engine results page. Google interprets that “This pattern suggests that the order in which Google returned the results was successful; most users found what they were looking for among the first two results and they never needed to go further down the page.”

There are two connotations here:

If the number one result on Google for any keyword is the least imperfect as judged by Google’s algorythm, then according to Google’s own interpretation of the heat maps, this result is also exactly what the searcher required according to the keyword. This is also substantiated by data that the average length of keywords entered in Google is now around 4.5 words per search. This means the searchers are entering more long tail keywords and the top positions are occupied by those who write the best title related to the key phrase.
Continuing on from the last argument, I would also suggest that this study has highlighted the importance of having the top three results for any given keyword. Have a look at the heatmap; user attention dwindles by the fifth result. Users are also refining their search if they do not find what they want in the top five results.
I would like to see more focus on self descriptive titles and on-site SEO because even if a site is first on the result page, searchers do seem to focus on them before they make a decision to click.
